The Regional Observatory of the Sustainable Empowerment Project has announced the publication of its first working paper, titled “Enhancing Agricultural Waste Management and Recycling to Promote Economic Development and Climate Action in Luxor Governorate.”
The paper is published as part of the Sustainable Empowerment Project, implemented by the Nag El Dar Islamic Charity Association in partnership with Misr El Kheir Foundation and funded by the European Union. It supports the project’s mission to strengthen the role of civil society organizations in advancing sustainable development and climate action at the local level.
The working paper examines the current state of agricultural waste management in Luxor Governorate by presenting key data, indicators, and statistics. It also analyzes the main challenges and opportunities related to agricultural waste recycling, highlighting its economic and environmental potential to support the green economy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In addition, the paper showcases several successful pilot initiatives implemented under the project, including “Energy from the Earth,” “Khosat Amal” (A Palm Frond of Hope), and “The Goodness of Our Land.” These initiatives demonstrate innovative approaches to transforming agricultural waste into valuable resources through the production of clean energy, animal feed, organic fertilizers, and handcrafted products, thereby promoting local economic development and supporting climate action efforts.
The paper concludes with a set of recommendations addressed to government institutions, civil society organizations, the private sector, and development partners. These recommendations aim to strengthen sustainable agricultural waste management systems, expand the adoption of successful models, and encourage greater investment in the circular economy across Luxor Governorate, contributing to a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.
